Gellert Grindelwald was a powerful and charismatic Dark wizard, considered one of the most dangerous wizards of all time, second only to Lord Voldemort. Born sometime in the late 19th century, he was expelled from Durmstrang Institute for experimenting with the Dark Arts.

Grindelwald traveled extensively, seeking out knowledge of the Dark Arts and magical artifacts. He became obsessed with the Deathly Hallows, believing they would grant him the power to overcome death and establish a new world order where wizards ruled over Muggles "for the greater good."

He formed a close, albeit ultimately fractured, relationship with Albus Dumbledore during his youth. Their shared intellectual curiosity and ambition led to a deep bond, but their differing views on wizarding dominance eventually led to a tragic duel that resulted in the accidental death of Dumbledore's sister, Ariana.

Grindelwald amassed a large following and waged a global campaign of terror, challenging the International Statute of Secrecy. He was eventually defeated and imprisoned by Dumbledore in 1945. Decades later, he was killed by Voldemort, who sought information about the Elder Wand.
