Prior to his allegiance to Morro, Cowler was a scholar and researcher specializing in ancient prophecies and forbidden knowledge. His obsession with the First Spinjitzu Master's secrets led him down a dark path, making him susceptible to Morro's influence.

Cowler uses his vast knowledge of Ninjago's history and mystical artifacts to aid Morro in his quest to possess Lloyd Garmadon and unleash the Preeminent, a monstrous being from the Cursed Realm.
