Hodor, born Walder, was a stable boy at Winterfell in the service of House Stark. He was notably simple-minded and only capable of uttering the word "Hodor."

Prior to his cognitive impairment, Walder was a normal boy who enjoyed playing and training with wooden swords. His transformation into "Hodor" occurred during a flashback experienced by Bran Stark, who was warging into Hodor's past self.

Bran witnessed the White Walkers approaching and inadvertently linked his mind to both Hodor's present and past. He inadvertently connected to the Weirwood network to see the past. Meera Reed was calling to him to "Hold the door!" and his young body endured the psychic echoes.

During the White Walker attack on the Three-Eyed Raven's cave, Hodor bravely held the door shut, allowing Bran and Meera to escape. This act sealed his fate, as the phrase "Hold the door" echoed through time, causing his mind to break and reducing his vocabulary to the one word he heroically fulfilled in his final moments.
