Beorn is a pivotal character in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit. He is a skin-changer, a being capable of transforming at will between a large, powerful black bear and a tall, strong man.
Beorn lives in a wooden house in a valley between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood. He is a solitary figure, generally distrustful of outsiders, but possesses a strong sense of justice and a deep hatred for goblins and Wargs.
When Gandalf and the thirteen dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins, seek shelter at his home, Beorn initially views them with suspicion. However, Gandalf's shrewd storytelling and the dwarves' earnestness eventually win him over.
