Kathryn Janeway is a fictional character in the Star Trek franchise, primarily known as the Captain of the USS Voyager in the television series Star Trek: Voyager. Played by Kate Mulgrew, Janeway holds the distinction of being the first female captain to lead a Star Trek series.
Born in Indiana in 2335, Janeway demonstrated a strong aptitude for science and leadership, eventually joining Starfleet Academy. Before being assigned command of Voyager, she held the rank of Captain and served in Starfleet's science division.
Janeway's most defining characteristic is her unwavering commitment to Starfleet's principles while facing extraordinary circumstances. During Voyager's pursuit of a Maquis ship, both vessels were pulled into the Delta Quadrant, over 70,000 light-years from Earth. Stranded and with a projected 75-year journey home, Janeway made the difficult decision to destroy the Caretaker array, preventing it from falling into the hands of the Kazon and potentially endangering the entire quadrant, but also eliminating their immediate chance of returning home.
Throughout Voyager's journey, Janeway balanced the need to protect her crew, uphold the Prime Directive, and find a way back to Federation space, making her a complex and respected figure in Star Trek lore.
