Abe Sapien, also known as Abraham Sapien, is a fictional character in the Hellboy comic book series created by Mike Mignola. He is a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD).
Abe Sapien was discovered in an abandoned hospital basement in Washington D.C. in 1878, immersed in a tank of water. He was labeled "Ichthyo Sapien," and his true origins were initially unknown. He's an amphibious humanoid with a physiology similar to a fish or salamander.
Over time, it was revealed that Abe Sapien was once Langdon Everett Caul, a scientist involved in occult practices. In 1865, during an underwater ritual, Caul transformed into an amphibious being, taking on the appearance of what is now known as Abe Sapien. Due to the transformation, he possesses a limited form of amnesia.
As a BPRD operative, Abe possesses enhanced intelligence, heightened senses, and can breathe underwater. He often accompanies Hellboy on missions involving aquatic environments or preternatural mysteries. Abe is generally portrayed as intelligent and thoughtful and an indispensable asset to the BPRD team.
