Lena Dunham is an American writer, director, actress, and producer best known for creating, writing, and starring in the HBO television series Girls (2012-2017).
Born in New York City on May 13, 1986, Dunham gained early recognition for her independent films, including Creative Nonfiction (2009) and Tiny Furniture (2010). Tiny Furniture, in which she also starred, won critical acclaim and earned her an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.
Girls, a comedy-drama centered on the lives of four young women navigating their twenties in New York City, cemented Dunham's place as a prominent voice in contemporary television. She received numerous accolades for her work on the series, including Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Following Girls, Dunham has continued to write, direct, and produce television and film projects. She authored the book Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned" (2014) and directed the film Sharp Stick (2022).
