Fujiwara no Sai is a pivotal character from the manga series Hikaru no Go. He first appears in Chapter 1 of the manga, titled "A Fleeting Wish."
Sai is a Heian-era ghost, a spirit bound to a Go board due to his unwavering passion for the game. He was a Go instructor to the Emperor but was unfairly accused of cheating and banished. Deeply ashamed, he drowned himself.
Unable to pass on, Sai's spirit remained attached to the board, waiting for someone to connect with him. He eventually encounters Hikaru Shindo, a young boy who becomes the vessel through which Sai can once again play Go.
Throughout the series, Sai guides Hikaru, teaching him the fundamentals and advanced strategies of Go. His ultimate goal is to achieve the "Divine Move," the perfect play in Go. Sai's presence significantly impacts Hikaru's life, shaping him into a dedicated and skilled Go player.
