Biography:
The Master of Lake-town, also known as the Governor, was the elected leader of Esgaroth, a human settlement built on the Long Lake in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit. While seemingly dedicated to the welfare of his people, the Master was primarily motivated by self-preservation and the pursuit of wealth.
He was a shrewd politician, adept at managing public opinion and maintaining his position through calculated actions and pronouncements. He initially welcomed Thorin's company of dwarves, recognizing the potential economic benefits they offered. However, his enthusiasm waned after Smaug's attack on Lake-town, revealing his self-serving nature as he focused on safeguarding his own resources amidst the chaos.
Following the dragon's demise, the Master encouraged Bard the Bowman to negotiate with Thorin over the treasure of Erebor. He later joined the alliance of men and elves to demand a share of the hoard, further showcasing his avarice. He perished during the Battle of Five Armies, having fled with stolen gold and succumbing to starvation in the wilderness.
