Tauriel is a character created for Peter Jackson's film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Hobbit*. She does not appear in Tolkien's original book.
She first appears in *The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug* (2013), the second film in the trilogy. Tauriel is a Woodland Elf, specifically a Silvan Elf, and the head of the Elven guard in Mirkwood.
Played by Evangeline Lilly, Tauriel is portrayed as a skilled warrior and archer. Her story arc involves a forbidden romance with the Dwarf Kíli, a plot line that was added for the films and not present in the source material. While brave and capable, her presence and romantic storyline were subjects of some controversy among Tolkien fans.
