Tauriel is a character created for Peter Jackson's film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Hobbit*. She does not appear in Tolkien's original book.
She first appears in *The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug* (2013), the second film in the trilogy. Tauriel is a Woodland Elf, specifically a Silvan Elf, and the head of the Elven guard in Mirkwood.
