Aragorn, son of Arathorn, appears only indirectly in The Hobbit. Although unnamed and unseen, his lineage is referenced. He is a descendant of Isildur and therefore the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor.
At the time of the events in The Hobbit, Aragorn is a young Ranger of the North, also known as a member of the Dúnedain. They are descendants of the Númenóreans, a race of men from the island of Númenor, who have dwindled in number and live in secret, protecting the Shire and other areas from remaining evils.
Aragorn lives a life of hardship and is raised in Rivendell by Elrond, who knows his true identity but keeps it secret to protect him from the enemies of his line, particularly Sauron. He is a skilled warrior and tracker, and although not directly involved in the quest to reclaim Erebor, his activities help maintain peace and security in the wider world, indirectly safeguarding the success of Thorin's company and Bilbo.
