Biography:
Balin is a Dwarf character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth stories. He first appears in The Hobbit as one of the thirteen Dwarfs who accompany Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf on their quest to reclaim the treasure of Erebor from the dragon Smaug. Balin is portrayed as one of the oldest and wisest of the company.
He is the brother of Dwalin and is described as having a white beard. Balin is often depicted as a key advisor to Thorin Oakenshield during the journey and is one of the Dwarfs who initially harbors the most faith in Bilbo's abilities.
Following the events of The Hobbit, Balin leads an expedition to reclaim the lost Dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dûm (Moria). He establishes a colony there but it ultimately fails when the Dwarfs are overrun by Orcs. Balin himself is killed by an Orc archer, as chronicled in records discovered later by the Fellowship of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings. The Peter Jackson movies followed this storyline.
