Biography:
Alan Turing (1912-1954) was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and computer scientist. He is widely considered one of the most influential figures in the development of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.
During World War II, Turing worked at Bletchley Park, the British codebreaking center. He played a crucial role in deciphering German Enigma ciphers, contributing significantly to the Allied victory. His work on the "Bombe," an electromechanical device used to break Enigma, is particularly noteworthy.
After the war, Turing contributed significantly to the design and development of early computers. He also explored the philosophical implications of artificial intelligence, proposing the Turing test to assess a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.
Turing was persecuted for his homosexuality, which was illegal in Britain at the time. He was convicted of "gross indecency" in 1952 and subjected to chemical castration. He died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning; his death was officially ruled a suicide. He received a posthumous royal pardon in 2013.
