Biography:
The Tin Man is a central character in the beloved 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. He is first encountered by Dorothy Gale along the Yellow Brick Road.
Portrayed by Jack Haley, the Tin Man is a woodsman made entirely of tin. He seeks the Wizard of Oz to obtain a heart, believing its absence prevents him from experiencing love and emotion.
Originally, he was a human woodsman who was cursed by the Wicked Witch of the West to lose parts of his body, replacing them with tin until he was entirely metal. This backstory isn't fully explored in the film but is present in the L. Frank Baum novel which is the source material for the film.
Throughout Dorothy's journey, the Tin Man demonstrates compassion and emotional intelligence, proving that he possessed a heart all along. He becomes a symbol for the idea that one's perceived flaws don't define their true character.
