Biography:
Mohamed Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942, and died June 3, 2016, was an American professional boxer, activist, and philanthropist. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century and one of boxing's greatest heavyweight champions.
Ali won an Olympic gold medal in 1960 and turned professional later that year. He gained global recognition for his boxing skills, flamboyant personality, and outspoken views on social and political issues. His first professional fight was October 29, 1960, against Tunney Hunsaker, which Ali won.
Known for his "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" fighting style, Ali won the world heavyweight title three times. He faced iconic opponents such as Joe Frazier and George Foreman in some of the most memorable boxing matches in history. Beyond the ring, Ali was a vocal advocate for civil rights and religious freedom, famously refusing to be drafted into the Vietnam War. He converted to Islam in 1964 and changed his name from Cassius Clay to Mohamed Ali.
