Splinter is a key character in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. He first appeared in the 1990 TMNT movie.
He is a mutated rat who serves as the Ninja Tortoises' sensei and adoptive father. In the movie, Splinter's origin involves him being the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi, a ninja master killed by the Shredder. Exposure to the same mutagen that transformed the turtles also mutated Splinter, granting him human-like intelligence and the ability to walk upright.
Splinter is a wise and skilled martial artist who trains the turtles in ninjutsu. He guides them on their journey to protect New York City from the Shredder and the Foot Clan.
