Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, first appeared in The Avengers #9 (October, 1964). He was initially portrayed as a villain, granted superhuman powers by Baron Zemo to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers.

Empowered with ionic energy, Wonder Man possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, and the ability to project ionic energy blasts. Initially seemingly killed after his first mission, his ionic form ensured he survived in a dormant state.

He was later revived by the Avengers and went on to become a hero in his own right. Wonder Man struggles with his nature as an artificial being, a concept often explored in his comic book appearances, but he has found kinship and belonging among the Avengers as the character developed.
