Felicia Hardy, known as Black Cat, first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 (July 1979). She is a complicated figure in Spider-Man's world, initially introduced as a cat burglar and adversary. The character's has had many iterations in various media.

A skilled martial artist and acrobat, Felicia's abilities were enhanced by a process granting her "bad luck" powers, causing misfortune to befall those around her. This contributed to her effectiveness as a thief but also created internal conflict. She has been portrayed with a strong sense of independence and a flirtatious, often adversarial relationship with Spider-Man.

Over time, Black Cat has shifted from villain to anti-hero and sometimes ally to Spider-Man. Her motivations are often self-serving, but she occasionally demonstrates a genuine desire to do good. Felicia is portrayed as a thief who relies on her agility, skill and bad luck powers to get her way and works mostly alone, but often with Spider-Man. While she is sometimes a villain, she is also sometimes an ally.
