Baron Helmut Zemo, commonly known as Baron Zemo, is a recurring antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first appeared in Captain America: Civil War (2016), portrayed by Daniel Brühl.
In the MCU, Zemo is a Sokovian man whose family was killed during the Avengers' battle against Ultron. Driven by a desire for revenge, he meticulously plots to dismantle the Avengers from within by exploiting the ideological differences between Captain America and Iron Man.
Unlike his comic book counterpart, this version of Zemo possesses no superhuman abilities. Instead, he relies on his intelligence, strategic planning, and manipulation to achieve his goals.
Following his initial defeat, Zemo reappears in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), where he becomes an uneasy ally to Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. During this time, he displays a surprising level of wealth and resources, and the show confirms he is of noble birth - a direct translation of the comicbook counterpart, but never explicitly explained in Captain America: Civil War.
