Ego the Living Planet is a Marvel Comics character who made his first appearance in Thor #132 (September 1966). He is a sentient planet with a vast intellect and the ability to manipulate his own substance.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ego's portrayal diverges somewhat from his comic book origins. He is depicted as a Celestial being, an ancient and powerful cosmic entity with the ability to create and control planets. In the film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ego is portrayed as Peter Quill/Star-Lord's father, revealing that he manipulated events to conceive a child capable of wielding his Celestial powers.
This version of Ego sought to expand his consciousness across the universe by seeding planets with extensions of himself, terraforming them to his liking. Ultimately, his expansionist plans and disregard for life put him in conflict with Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy, leading to his destruction.
