Dorothy Gale is a fictional character most famously known as the protagonist of L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its numerous adaptations, most notably the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, where she was portrayed by Judy Garland.
Dorothy is depicted as a young girl from rural Kansas, living on a farm with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and her dog, Toto. She's generally characterized as optimistic, kind-hearted, and brave. Driven by a desire to return home after being swept away to the magical Land of Oz by a tornado, she embarks on a journey down the Yellow Brick Road.
