Major Motoko Kusanagi, often simply called "Major," is the primary protagonist of Masamune Shirow's manga and anime series, Ghost in the Shell. She is a cyborg employed by Public Security Section 9, a fictional anti-cybercrime organization in Japan.
Kusanagi is a full-body prosthetic cyborg, possessing a powerful and highly customizable artificial body. Her original human brain and spinal cord reside within this shell. Prior to her cyberization at a young age, she experienced a traumatic event that necessitated the extensive augmentation.
Known for her exceptional hacking skills, combat prowess, and strategic thinking, Kusanagi is a highly valued asset to Section 9. She leads field operations and tackles complex cyber threats, often questioning the nature of consciousness and identity in a technologically advanced world.
Throughout the series, Kusanagi grapples with existential questions about her own "ghost," or soul, and its relationship to her artificial body. Her journey often involves philosophical explorations of what it means to be human in an era where the lines between human and machine are increasingly blurred. She is a complex and iconic figure in cyberpunk anime.
