Motoko Kusanagi, often referred to as "The Major," is a prominent character in Masamune Shirow's manga and subsequent anime adaptations, most notably Ghost in the Shell. She is a cyborg employed by Public Security Section , a fictional anti-cybercrime organization within the Japanese government.

Kusanagi possesses a fully prosthetic body, granting her immense physical strength, speed, and various hacking capabilities. Her consciousness, or "ghost," resides within this artificial shell.

Her first anime appearance was in the film Ghost in the Shell (1995), directed by Mamoru Oshii. Within the narrative, she grapples with existential questions regarding her identity and the nature of consciousness in a technologically advanced world. She is a skilled tactician, leader, and combatant, making her a formidable figure in the fight against cyber threats.
