Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding is a fictional character, most famously portrayed by Morgan Freeman in the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption, based on the novella by Stephen King.

Red is an inmate at Shawshank Penitentiary, serving a life sentence for murder, specifically the murder of his wife and a neighbor. He becomes known within the prison for his ability to procure items, earning him the nickname "the guy who can get things."

Over two decades, Red develops a close and enduring friendship with fellow inmate Andy Dufresne. Red acts as a mentor and confidant to Andy, offering guidance on surviving within the harsh prison environment. He is initially cynical and resigned to his fate, but Andy's unwavering hope gradually influences him.

Red repeatedly applies for parole, but is consistently denied for decades, deemed not rehabilitated. He eventually gains parole after serving 40 years. Struggling to adjust to life outside prison, Red ultimately fulfills a promise to Andy, leading him to Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and a reunion with his long-time friend.
