Biography:
Andy Dufresne is the protagonist of the 1982 novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" by Stephen King, and its acclaimed 1994 film adaptation, "The Shawshank Redemption."
Dufresne, a successful banker in Maine, is wrongly convicted in 1947 of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to two life sentences at Shawshank State Penitentiary. Throughout his incarceration, Andy maintains his innocence and a quiet dignity.
Inside, he faces brutality and corruption but uses his financial skills to gain favor with guards and inmates alike, managing their finances and laundering money for Warden Norton. This allows him to improve conditions within the prison, establishing a library and gaining respect.
Over nearly two decades, Andy secretly plans his escape, meticulously chipping away at a tunnel behind a poster of Rita Hayworth, and other iconic movie actresses. He ultimately escapes in 1966, exposing Warden Norton's corruption and achieving his long-sought freedom in Zihuatanejo, Mexico.
