Mario Lemieux, often called "Super Mario," is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.
Lemieux played his entire NHL career (1984-2006, with several injury-related sabbaticals) with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He led the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and 1992.
A dominant center, Lemieux won six Art Ross Trophies as the NHL's leading scorer and three Hart Memorial Trophies as the league's most valuable player. His career was marked by exceptional skill, vision, and scoring ability.
Beyond his on-ice accomplishments, Lemieux is celebrated for his resilience. He battled Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic back pain, overcoming these challenges to continue his career. He also saved the Penguins from bankruptcy by becoming the team's owner.
Lemieux was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997, having his jersey number 66 retired by the Penguins. His contributions to hockey extend beyond playing, encompassing ownership and his inspiring personal story.
