The Flying Monkeys are fictional characters most famously known from the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. Serving as the Wicked Witch of the West's aerial enforcers, they are winged simians who carry out her bidding. Their primary function is to terrorize the land of Oz and capture anyone who opposes the Witch.
The origins of the Flying Monkeys vary depending on the adaptation. In L. Frank Baum's original novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, they are not naturally subservient to the Witch. Instead, they were initially bound by the Golden Cap, a magical artifact that allowed its wearer to command them three times. The Witch, having acquired the Cap, uses the Monkeys for her own malevolent purposes. After she loses the Golden Cap they become free.
Visually, the Flying Monkeys are portrayed as grotesque creatures with blue skin, menacing fangs, and tattered uniforms. Their screeching cries and aggressive behavior contribute to their menacing presence. While primarily associated with The Wizard of Oz, variations of winged monkey-like creatures have appeared in other fantasy and horror media, often drawing inspiration from the original depiction.
