Black Vulcan is a superhero character originally created for the Hanna-Barbera animated series Super Friends. He first appeared in the show's second season, The All-New Super Friends Hour, in 1977.
Due to licensing issues that prevented the use of the existing DC Comics character Black Lightning, Black Vulcan was created as a stand-in. His powers primarily revolved around electricity, allowing him to generate and manipulate lightning.
Unlike most of the other Super Friends, Black Vulcan's origins were never explicitly stated on the show. He was presented as a member of the team with little backstory. He could fly by channeling electricity to propel himself, and project electrical bolts.
He is frequently criticized, along with fellow *Super Friends*-original characters, as being stereotypical. This criticism stems from the perceived lack of cultural sensitivity in his design and characterization. He has since been re-evaluated in retrospective analyses of the *Super Friends* franchise.
