Ada Lovelace, born Augusta Ada Byron on December 10, 1815, was an English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine.
She is widely regarded as the first computer programmer due to her notes on the Analytical Engine, which included an algorithm designed to be processed by a machine. This algorithm is considered the first published sequence of operations intended for a computer.
Lovelace recognized the potential of the machine beyond mere calculation, envisioning its capabilities to compose elaborate music, produce graphics, and be used for both practical and theoretical applications. She died on November 27, 1852, at the age of 36, from uterine cancer.
Her contributions remained largely unrecognized during her lifetime, but in the mid-20th century, Lovelace's notes were rediscovered, and her importance as an early pioneer in the field of computer science was established. Ada Lovelace Day is now celebrated annually to recognize the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
