Jiraiya, also known as the Toad Sage, is a significant character in the *Naruto* anime and manga series. He first appears in Naruto episode 52 and manga chapter 90.
He is one of the Legendary Sannin, alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru, all trained by the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Jiraiya is renowned for his immense power, perverted nature (which he claims is for research), and his role as a mentor.
Jiraiya travels the world, seeking inspiration for his novels (primarily adult fiction) and training promising ninja. His most notable students include Minato Namikaze (Naruto's father) and Naruto Uzumaki himself. He plays a crucial role in Naruto's development, teaching him the Rasengan and helping him control the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra. Jiraiya ultimately dies at the hands of his former student, Nagato (Pain), while gathering intelligence about the Akatsuki.
