Faramir is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel, *The Lord of the Rings*. He first appears in *The Two Towers*, the second volume of the trilogy.
He is the younger son of Denethor II, the Steward of Gondor, and brother of Boromir. Unlike his brother, Faramir is not as overtly favored by his father. Faramir is presented as a wise and just leader.
Faramir is the Captain of the Rangers of Ithilien. During his watch, he encounters Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee and realizes their quest to destroy the One Ring. Famously, he resists the temptation to seize the Ring for Gondor, instead aiding Frodo and Sam on their journey to Mordor.
Later, Faramir falls gravely ill after being wounded. After the War of the Ring, he marries Éowyn of Rohan and becomes the Prince of Ithilien, a role that highlights his strength of character.
