David Lister, often simply called Lister, is a fictional character from the British science fiction comedy series, Red Dwarf. He is portrayed as a Liverpudlian space bum and the last known living human in his universe for a significant portion of the series.

Lister's story begins as a third-class technician aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf. His primary goal in life is to return to Earth and establish a farm in Fiji, sustained by scavenging fallen coconuts. This ambition often clashes with his lazy and unmotivated work ethic.

His confinement to stasis as punishment for smuggling his cat, Frankenstein, onboard Red Dwarf leads to a catastrophic event. A radiation leak wipes out the entire crew, except for Lister, who is awakened three million years later.

Awakening into a vastly different universe, Lister finds himself accompanied by his hologrammatic former bunkmate, Rimmer; a sanitation robot called Kryten; and a descendant of Frankenstein, known as Cat. His subsequent adventures revolve around navigating the bizarre and dangerous realities of deep space and, perhaps one day, finding his way back to Earth.
