Gozer the Gozerian, also known as Gozer the Destructor, is a powerful interdimensional entity and the primary antagonist in the 1984 film Ghostbusters. Gozer is not inherently malevolent but instead acts as a neutral force of destruction, summoned by ritualistic practices or inadvertently drawn to worlds ripe for chaos.
Originating from an unknown dimension, Gozer possessed immense psychic abilities, allowing them to manipulate reality and manifest in various forms. Before the events of Ghostbusters, Gozer terrorized civilizations across the cosmos, taking on different shapes to suit the fears and beliefs of each population.
In the film, Gozer is summoned to New York City via an apartment building designed as an antenna for supernatural energies. Lacking a predefined form in the minds of the Ghostbusters, Gozer allows them to choose its appearance. Their collective thoughts inadvertently result in Gozer manifesting as the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, a harmless mascot twisted into a destructive giant.
