Space Sheriff Gavan, known as Retsu Ichijouji in his civilian identity, is the primary protagonist of the Metal Hero Series' debut entry, Space Sheriff Gavan (1982-1983). He is a member of the Galactic Union Police, tasked with protecting Earth from the evil Makuu Empire led by Don Horror.

Gavan, hailing from Planet Bird, is selected for his exceptional combat skills and unwavering dedication to justice. He possesses the ability to "Electron-Beam Morph" into his armored Space Sheriff form, granting him enhanced strength, speed, and a variety of specialized weapons, including the Laser Blade and the Cyberian motorcycle.

Throughout the series, Gavan battles Makuu's monstrous creations and thwarts their schemes to conquer Earth. He works closely with Mimi, a fellow Galatic Union Police officer disguised as a local Earthling, and confronts his personal demons connected to the loss of his father to Makuu. He reappears in later Metal Hero series and crossover films, solidifying his status as an iconic figure in Japanese tokusatsu television.
