Sarutobi Asuma was a Jonin-level shinobi from Konohagakure's Sarutobi clan. He was the son of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and uncle to Konohamaru.

Asuma initially had a strained relationship with his father, leading him to briefly leave Konoha. He later returned and became a respected ninja, specializing in Wind Release techniques which he channeled through Trench Knives infused with chakra.

He led Team 10, consisting of Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka, and Choji Akimichi. Asuma focused on teaching them teamwork and understanding their strengths, nurturing their unique Ino-Shika-Cho formation abilities.

Asuma was romantically involved with Kurenai Yuhi, eventually becoming the father of her child, Mirai Sarutobi. He considered Shikamaru to be his most promising student and entrusted him with protecting his future child.

Asuma tragically died in battle against Hidan of the Akatsuki. His death served as a major turning point for Shikamaru, motivating him to avenge his teacher and become a stronger ninja.
